Veterans Walk of Flags - Labor Day
Veterans Walk of Flags -
The Veterans Walk of Flags is a moving tribute to our veterans with 1,862 flags displayed in 10 areas around town: Veterans Park, NP Park, Court House, Junius Ave., Union Ave., Wright Park, Neese Park, City Hall Park, Friberg/Summit Ave., and the Minnesota Veterans Home. Flags are displayed 10 times per year (weather permitting): Loyalty Day, Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Purple Hearts Day, Labor Day, POW/MIA Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day.
VOLUNTEERS are needed to install/take down the flags each day: 7:30-8:30am and 4:30-5:30pm.
The Fergus Falls Veterans Walk of Flags began September 2, 2002. Perrie Sheldon came up with the idea after visiting his son and daughter-in-law in Sheldon, Iowa and viewing the town’s “Avenue of Flags”, where his son had purchased a flag in Perrie’s name to honor him. He thought that would be a great idea for Fergus Falls and along with co-founder, Stan Morrill, had various meetings and discussions with the City of Fergus Falls. The late Mayor Kelly Ferber gave the project the go-ahead. Soon after that it was named “Veterans Walk of Flags” and would start in Veterans Memorial Park in Fergus Falls. Flags were sold at $75 a piece to honor any veteran, living or deceased, who served in any war with an Honorable Discharge. There is a "waiting list" to purchase flags as the volunteers/trailers are at capacity. If there are at least 30 more volunteers, more flags can be purchased for more veterans.
They are put up around 7:15 a.m. by volunteers working out of 4 different trailers and taken down at 4:30. Volunteers are always welcome!
The Veterans Walk of Flags, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit independent organization. All contributions are tax deductible and are accepted at any time.
