Business Review: Third-generation business provides local support, finds success

“Everything we do is local,” Mitch said. “We support all local businesses.”

The local services Fergus Power Pump provides vary from servicing septic tanks, steaming frozen septic lines to providing portable restrooms, luxury restrooms for weddings and high-end events and providing dust control for gravel roads and road stabilization. Nationally, the business rents wastewater treatment equipment and cleans out wastewater treatment plants.

Fergus Power Pump also provides services and management for municipal, industrial, agricultural and residential entities for removal, transportation and land application of Biosolids.

Fergus Power Pump was started in 1983 by Mitch and his father. In 1987, Mitch bought into the business.

“My dad and I started in the ag industry, pumping manure pits,” Mitch said. “We had the first TerraGator in the U.S. to inject manure and then we basically just grew into the industrial market and still kept our roots at our local septic services.”

Since its inception, Mitch said Fergus Power Pump tries to expand its business every year. This year they purchased luxury restrooms from Royal Flush and they have expanded their dust control coverage to about a 100-mile radius. The business also wants to expand its environmental, commercial work in their Mid-state coverage, which includes Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Now Fergus Power pump has about 17 full-time employees and numerous part-time employees.

“We are very proud of our employees,” Mitch said. “We have a lot of 20-plus-year employees here and so, the biggest issue we have facing us is retirements.”

In their line of work, Mitch said another issue they commonly face is locating septic tanks.

“They are especially hard to find when there is a lot of snow and if someone has an issue, it’s hard to find a white cap in the middle of the yard,” Mitch said.

The winter season can cause a variety of issues for the homeowner as well. McClain recommended if a homeowner plans on going on vacation, have a neighbor flush the toilets once a day to prevent the sewer lines from freezing. Because of frozen sewer lines, Mitch said Fergus Power Pump’s services at this time of year consist of steaming and jetting sewer lines.

“The services vary from year to year depending on how much snow cover we get,” Mitch said.

As the snow begins to melt and the temperatures rise, Fergus Power Pump wants everyone to know that doesn’t mean the end to freezing pipes. Frost actually dives deeper into the ground as it warms up. As spring approaches, Mitch said he also advises everyone to start planning their septic tank maintenance.

“It’s recommended that everybody pump their septic tanks every three years,” Mitch said. “All of our customer records are computerized so we can send out reminders to customers and if they have any questions, give us a call.”
