Big Chief: Cornerstone for travelers and long held traditions

Big Chief Truck and Auto Plaza, situated off exit 61 at the junction of highway 59 and interstate 94 in Fergus Falls, MN, has been family owned and operated since 1994. It was originally established in 1968 as a Texaco brand offering Texaco’s “Sky Chief” fuel to motorists traveling the first developed section of Interstate 94 in Minnesota, which ran from Moorhead to Albany. Big Chief quickly became a cornerstone for travelers, offering state of the art fuel, food and tire repairs.

Ownership changed hands several times until it was eventually taken over by the Rogers family who have built upon Big Chief’s status as a cornerstone for travelers and the community by developing signature items in the café such as bison burgers and hand cut steaks, expanding the menu, undergoing several additions to the facility including new fuel pumps, offering Diesel Exhaust Fluid, or Def, and any other upgrades necessary to keep pace with the ever changing truck stop industry. For 23 years, the Rogers family have maintained a clear focus on meeting the needs of motorists.

With that sentiment in mind, in 2017 the Rogers family and Big Chief management decided to make a new round of significant upgrades to its facilities. These upgrades include: a new patio with outdoor seating, new bathrooms in the café, remodeled bathrooms in the C-Store, two additional trucker showers, a coin-operated laundry, a trucker’s lounge with cozy chairs and cable television, and numerous cosmetic upgrades to the exterior of the building.

Big Chief Controller, Ryan Carlson provided perspective on the changes: “We take pride in providing a high quality experience for our customers, many of whom are traveling from other areas of the country, or even Canada. In a way, Big Chief provides a glimpse into Fergus Falls and we take that seriously.”

Carlson went on to add that Big Chief has experienced additional traffic throughout the remodel which he attributes to the numerous upgrades and added amenities. Being a 24/7 truck stop creates a sense of responsibility and expectation that Carlson believes Big Chief will always strive to meet.

“We feel that we are differentiated from other stops in the area,” Carlson said. “We are open 24/7, accessed by truck-friendly on and off ramps on I-94, and we feature a large lot for overnight parking. With the preexisting services and the newly added amenities, truckers know they can come to Big Chief and have their needs met.”

In addition to truckers, Carlson said Big Chief also enjoys a host of regulars from around the area. “There are too many regulars to list and we like that. We enjoy being a place for the ‘meeting of minds,’ said Carlson with a smile, “there’s a lot of hot air too, from time to time.”

Big Chief Truck and Auto Plaza is more than just a place to pass through. It’s a destination; a cornerstone of the community; a place where relationships and traditions have been cultivated and nurtured for nearly 50 years.

And…In 2018, the Rogers family are proud to announce plans to cultivate relationships with the areas sportsmen and sportswomen through the opening of a new business to be named “Little Chief Outpost,” located at the former location of Take 5 on Pebble Lake Road. The business will offer food and fuel as well as a number of high quality products for the area’s sportsmen and sportswomen, including fishing tackle and live bait. The Rogers family hopes Little Chief Outpost will become a new kind of cornerstone for the community of Fergus Falls and the lakes area at large. As Carlson quips, “We’ve been in the business of helping people get where they’re trying to go for many years, now we’re going to help them catch fish when they get there.”
