Fall Band Concert
Fall Band Concert
Concert-goers will enjoy an array of classical and jazz favorites at the annual Fall Concert of the M State bands at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, on the Fergus Falls campus.
The evening will include a Concert Band tribute to legendary American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. Bernstein died in 1990.
Selections by the Concert Band, under the direction of Jim Iverson, will include Bernstein’s “Danzon” from “Fancy Free,” “Overture to Candide” and “Fanfare for the Inauguration of John F. Kennedy.” Following Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, Bernstein wrote, “This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.”
The Concert Band also will perform selections from Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” recognized as one of the most popular pieces of classical music. For its upcoming spring concert, the Concert Band will collaborate with the M State choral department to perform 10 movements from “Carmina Burana.”
The Jazz Band, directed by Scott Kummrow, will perform old favorites and some lesser-known numbers in the style of swing, funk, Latin, blues and rock: “Play That Funky Music,” “Freddie Freeloader,” “Birdland,” “On Green Dolphin Street,” “Danny Boy” and “Norwegian Wood.”
The Concert Band will perform in Legacy Hall, and following intermission the audience will move to Waage Theatre for the Jazz Band performance.
Tickets are $9 in advance and $11 at the door for adults, and $7 in advance and $8 at the door for students. Advance tickets are available in the M State Box Office, by calling 218.736.1600 or online at mstatetickets.com.
